Francisco Carbullido to Lead Liberation Day Parade
as Grand Marshall
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 15, 2008
The 64th Liberation Day Committee has announced that Francisco Carbullido, the last remaining defender of Wake Island, will lead this year's Liberation Day Parade as Grand Marshall.
Shortly after the Japanese invasion in 1941, Carbullido was one of 45 young men enlisted by the U.S. Marines to help defend the island. However, opposition forces overwhelmingly outnumbered American troops, forcing Carbullido and others to surrender for the remainder of the war as prisoners on Wake Island.
Carbullido is the last remaining survivor of the Wake Island prison camp whose heroic story was not recognized until the late 1980's.
The 64th Liberation Day Committee also will honor several other individuals as Honorary Grand Marshalls who will follow Carbullido during the 64th Annual Liberation Day Parade, along with other World War II veterans.
For more information, please contact Terry Mortera at 687-0317 or visit the 64th Liberation Day Web site at www.liberation2008.guam.gov.
